Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has vowed to introduce a one-week paternity leave for men if elected in the December elections.

Speaking at the NDC Women’s Manifesto launch in Kumasi, he further announced plans to extend maternity leave from three to four months, giving mothers more time to care for their newborns.

Mahama explain the importance of ensuring newborns receive proper care in their early stages and emphasize the need for both parents to be involve in childcare.

Moreover, he specified that the paternity leave would only apply to legally married men, who would need to provide proof of their marital status to qualify.

“While mothers will receive four months of maternity leave, fathers will be eligible to a week of paternity leave to support both mother and child. However, men must provide evidence that the woman is their legal spouse to benefit from this policy.”
