President John Mahama has ordered an immediate investigation into the violent clash between illegal miners and military personnel at the AngloGold Ashanti Mines.
In a statement on January 19, President Mahama express deep regret over the loss of eight lives, sent his condolences to the victims’ families, and emphasize the need to hold those responsible for any unlawful actions accountable.
Further, the government has also directed AngloGold Ashanti to cover the medical expenses of the injured and handle the burial arrangements for the deceased.
Additionally, security forces have been task to take immediate action to restore order and implement measures to prevent similar incidents.
The incident, which occurred at approximately 11:00 PM on Saturday, January 18, 2025, involved around 60 illegal miners who breached the security fence to access the mine’s Deep Decline area.
