Mahama Calls For Urgent Reforms In Ghana’s Energy Sector

President-elect John Dramani Mahama has called for urgent reforms in Ghana’s energy sector, citing its fragile state.

During a courtesy visit from Canadian High Commissioner to Ghana, Myriam Montrat, in Accra on Friday, Mahama criticised the current government’s portrayal of economic recovery, particularly the unresolved $2.5 billion debt, despite a $3 billion bailout.

“The energy sector needs immediate attention; if not, it could collapse the economy,”lingering debt undermines any claims of economic turnaround and accused the current administration of spreading misleading optimism about the nation’s finances.”Mahama said.

Further, he warned that the sector’s instability could destabilise the entire economy. He pledged that his administration would prioritise reforms to ensure a more efficient, sustainable, and reliable energy supply for all Ghanaians.

“That debt alone could erase all the progress made, and they are trying to create a more positive narrative about their economic management before they leave office,” Mahama stated.

Assuring Ghanaians of transparency, Mahama said his administration would fully disclose the country’s financial situation when it assumes office.

“We will open the books and let Ghanaians see the real situation. Once they understand the truth, they will grasp why we need to take tough measures to restore stability,” Mahama added.
