Renowned Ghanaian actress Grace Omaboe, popularly known as Maame Dokono, has shared her challenging political experiences.
At her birthday launch on Tuesday, July 30, Maame Dokono announced her decision to withdraw from active politics.
According to her, she rose to fame through her role in the acclaimed Akan drama series “Obra” on GTV and as the host of “By the Fireside.”
Her political journey began during the administration of the late Jerry John Rawlings, when she joined the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
She disclose that her close association with former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings brought her into the party’s inner circle.
However, she shifted her allegiance to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) when Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo became its flagbearer in 2008, a move that proved consequential.
After the NPP’s electoral defeat, many blamed Maame Dokono for the party’s loss, subjecting her to severe criticism.
She expressed regret over her political involvement, stating,
“If you are in politics and your government doesn’t win, it becomes a problem… I joined the two parties, and I really suffered… so because of what I am doing, I decided not to do it again.”
In addition, Maame Dokono stated that she will celebrate 60 years in the entertainment industry with events including a health screening and the release of her book on September 7, 2024.
