Kwesi Appiah Steps Down From GFA Executive Council

Written by Sarah Boye

Former Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah has temporarily stepped down from his position on the Ghana Football Association’s Executive Council to focus on his role as head coach of Sudan.

According to reports, he made this decision as he prepared for the critical 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. Appiah resigned after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) requested he address a conflict of interest arising from his dual roles, especially since Sudan will face Ghana in significant qualifiers this month.

In a letter signed by CAF’s Director of Legal Affairs, Felix Majani, Appiah learnt that his simultaneous roles violated CAF statutes and the FIFA Code of Ethics. Majani urged him to take immediate action to resolve the conflict, recommending that he temporarily resign from one of the positions until the competition concludes.

Appiah won a seat on the Executive Council during last year’s Ghana FA elective congress, but he now needs to step back until November due to this conflict of interest.
