Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has urged justice for protesters accused of committing offences during the recent Democracy Hub demonstration in Accra.

In an interview with Angel FM, Kufuor stressed the importance of holding individuals accountable, particularly those involved in assaults on law enforcement. He called for prompt legal action to address any unlawful conduct, while underscoring the need to respect the right to protest.

“If you attack a police officer or take their car key, you must face the law. Such actions cannot go unpunished,” Kufuor stated firmly.

While affirming the right to protest, he condemned violence and property damage, insisting that those responsible must face appropriate consequences.

Kufuor also called for a unified effort to tackle illegal mining, or “galamsey,” pointing to its destructive impact on Ghana’s water bodies and the well-being of its people. He advocated for a holistic approach to protect the country’s natural resources, including its forests, water, and climate.

“This menace threatens not only the environment but also the livelihoods of many Ghanaians. We must work together to safeguard our natural resources for future generations.”

The demonstration, which caused significant property damage and road blockages, has attracted widespread attention.
