Kenya President Halts Salary Raise For Ministers Amid Protests

Written by Sarah Boye

Kenyan President William Ruto has instructed his ministers and legislators to exercise financial responsibility by suspending their recent salary increases in response to public outcry and nationwide protests.

A spokesperson for the Kenya State House, Hussein Mohammed, affirmed this directive on a contentious Wednesday in July, amidst mounting criticism of the salary hikes.

Mr Mohammed emphasised that President Ruto underscored the importance of fiscal prudence across all government branches, prompting a reassessment of the compensation for ministers and lawmakers.

Reports had previously linked these pay adjustments with ongoing protests throughout Kenya, which tragically led to multiple casualties and injuries.
