The Manhyia District Hospital physician, whose father engaged in a contentious phone call with a facility nurse, has received support from the Junior Doctors’ Association of Ghana.
The doctor’s father, Alex Opoku-Mensah, who also serves as the Ashanti Region Director of the National Service Scheme (NSS), is heard in the phone conversation which has since been made public, apparently criticising the nurse.
On Tuesday, November 29, the Ashanti Region GRNMA branch published a statement demanding the dismissal of Mr. Opoku-Mensah, who has now offered an apology for the altercation.
A/R GRNMA issues a 72-hour deadline to the government for “insulting” the NSS boss being fired.
A/R NSS’s head issues an apology for “insulting” a nurse.
However, junior doctors who are commenting on the situation argue that the doctor did nothing wrong.
“While we do not condone the actions of the father, it is imperative to set the records straight on the falsehood being peddled to bring the professional competence of the doctor into disrepute,” a statement issued on Tuesday said.
The statement, signed by President of the Ghana Junior Doctors’ Association Dr Louisa A. Nkrumah and Secretary Dr Norbert Kipo, stated that the information circulated about the doctor and her alleged incorrect prescription “is untrue, according to hospital management and records available.”
“We, therefore, entreat all media houses to pull down their broadcast concerning the alleged wrong prescription of medication and entreat the general public to disregard such allegations against the doctor.”
The statement maintains that there has been good communication between the medical staff and the nursing staff and that “we will continue to work as a team to provide quality healthcare to our valued clients and the people of Ghana as a whole.”
