Ini Edo Loses Legal Battle To Chineye Nworah

Written by Sarah Boye

Renowned Nollywood actress Ini Edo has lost a legal dispute with Chineye ‘Chi Chi’ Nworah over the rights to the Netflix original series Shanty Town.

The Nigerian Trademark Registry and the Nigerian Copyright Commission both ruled in favour of Nworah and her production company, Giant Creative Media Limited.

On January 10, 2024, the Trademark Registry rejected Edo and Minnie Empire Productions Limited’s (MEP) claims to the trademarks ‘Scar’ NG/TM/O/2023/121745 and ‘Shanty Town’ NG/TM/O/2023/97482, declaring their petition baseless and affirming Nworah’s exclusive rights.

On July 24, 2024, the NCC dismissed Edo and MEP’s attempt to invalidate two copyright certificates held by Nworah for the literary and audiovisual works of *Shanty Town*, confirming their validity and Nworah’s ownership.

Olisa Agbakoba Legal secured these victories for Nworah and GCM Giant Creative Media Limited. *Shanty Town*, a six-part crime thriller released on January 20, 2023, features a star-studded cast including Chidi Mokeme, Ini Edo, and Richard Mofe-Damijo.
