In a recent interview on The KSM Show, Ghanaian broadcaster Bridget Otoo shared the details behind her removal from Media General’s TV3 in 2016.
Ms Otoo explained that her outspoken views and criticisms, particularly concerning the IEA debate, led to her being taken off the air.
She recounted how the organizers of the IEA debate wrote a complaint to TV3’s board of directors, accusing her of exerting undue influence over her colleagues.
Bridget stated.
“While working at TV3, my opinion on the IEA debate, which I considered ineffective, led to a complaint from Jean Mensa, who was with the IEA at the time. They claimed I had significant influence over my colleagues. ” The backlash from her comments prompted the CEO of TV3 to ask me to be more agreeable with the NPP supporters.
“The CEO at the time told me to be nice to these NPP people. But I insisted on expressing my genuine opinions. I told her my solid arguments were not meant to coerce but to articulate my beliefs effectively. If my arguments convince you, it’s because I’m doing a good job,” .
Reflecting on her experience, Ms Otoo added; I noted a pattern at the station of sidelining presenters whose views were not favored by management.
“They’ve tried that now with Johnny Hughes and others. When they don’t like your direction, they take you off the air,” .
Leaving TV3 made me appreciate social media over traditional television. Those experiences made me love social media because I could control my narrative. She emphasized .
