“I Sold Water And Second-Hand Goods To Survive”-Joyce Blessing

Written by Sarah Boye

Ghanaian gospel artist Joyce Blessing opened up about the struggles she faced growing up, revealing that she sold pure water, second-hand clothes, and other items to make ends meet.

In an interview on Hitz FM on January 15, 2025, she explained that these challenges stemmed from her desire to support her single mother, who was raising five children.

Joyce shared,

“It was tough from the start. People don’t believe me when I say I sold pure water. Sometimes, I also sold second-hand clothes, brooms, and gari. We sold whatever we could get our hands on, and I did this with my sister. My parents were unaware of how I made it to Accra until someone told my mother about a song I had recorded that became a hit.

The singer also recalled the most painful moment of her life—searching for her father.

“The saddest moment was when I walked from home looking for my father, but I couldn’t find him. I had no money for the return trip and didn’t know anyone in the area, so I walked all the way from Abuakwa to Tafo. When I got home, I was in tears. My mother asked why I was crying, but I couldn’t explain, and then she started crying too.
