Keeny Ice, a Ghanaian Hip-hop/Hiplife artist recently revealed the reason behind his refusal to perform at the 2023 VGMA Xperience Concert held at the Ho Sports Stadium. In an interview with Giovanni Caleb on Showbiz360, the artist, whose real name is Amu Barnabas, explained that he declined the earlier performance slot due to the timing allocated to him.
According to Keeny Ice there was no audience present at the stadium when he was scheduled to perform. Feeling that the given time slot did not do justice to his talent and popularity, he decided to turn down the opportunity. “I feel like when you are coming to the Volta region, that place is like another country on its own. They have to find out who is killing it there because the time given to me to perform was like when there was nobody in the stadium, and I was like no, I deserve prime time,” he expressed to Giovanni.
Keeny Ice went on to advise the VGMA team to conduct proper research and understand the suitable time slots for each artist. Even if he wasn’t a nominee, he believed that organizers should acknowledge an artist’s prominence and allocate appropriate performance times. “Even if I am not a nominee, you should do your research and know where to fix who,” he emphasized.
However, the artist expressed his appreciation to Camidoh for providing him with a platform to perform during his set, after being denied primetime by the show organizers. Keeny Ice acknowledged Camidoh’s support, stating, “Shout out to Camidoh. He came on stage and introduced me a little bit, and then I came in and did it.”
Currently promoting his latest track, ‘Frazz,’ Keeny Ice explained the meaning behind the song. He described it as a term coined from the streets, signifying the pinnacle of enjoyment and the desire for a stress-free experience. “It’s a term we coined from the streets to describe when you reach the peak of your enjoyment and you don’t want stress. You know, if you reach your enjoyment peak, the kind of dance you do is not any stressful thing, that’s Frazz,” he clarified when questioned about the song’s meaning.
Keeny Ice’s decision to decline the earlier performance at the 2023 VGMA Xperience Concert was primarily driven by the inadequate audience presence during the allotted time slot. As an artist dedicated to delivering his best to his fans, he emphasized the importance of proper research by event organizers to ensure each artist receives a suitable performance opportunity.
