Former Black Stars coach Charles Kwablan Akonnor has voiced his surprise at Ghana’s struggle to qualify for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Speaking to JoySports, Akonnor remarked,

“I can’t believe Ghana won’t qualify for AFCON. They have to. We have the players capable of making it happen.”

Further, he stressed the importance of winning the upcoming matches, stating,

“In the short term, we have no choice but to win. It’s entirely possible. If we could secure a convincing victory in Mali, we can certainly defeat Sudan. Angola is no bigger challenge than Mali. Our focus now is simply to win.”

Ghana has so far collected only two points from a possible nine, with draws against Niger and Sudan and a loss to Angola. Currently third in Group F, the team must win all three remaining matches to guarantee their place in the tournament.

Akonnor served as head coach of the Black Stars from January 2020 to September 2021.
