The governor of the Bank of Ghana has informed Central Banking that he opposes the NDC, the main opposition party,’s demands that he step down.
On October 3, smaller organizations and the National Democratic Congress, the major opposition party, participated in a march on the central bank’s offices. However, Ernest Addison maintains that “the demonstration yesterday was completely unnecessary” and that neither he nor his deputies plan to resign.
In an interview with the international business website Central Banking, Dr. Addison stated that he is not resigning and called the NDC’s protest “completely unnecessary.”
In regard to the #OccupyBoGProtest, Addison said, “The Minority in Parliament has many channels to channel their grievances in civilized societies, not through demonstrations in the streets as hooligans.”
The demonstration was conducted on Tuesday, October 3 to oppose the economic crisis that the demonstrators deemed to be the outcome of the BoG’s inadequate fiscal strategy.
Additionally, Addison denied the Minority’s assertions that he printed money to support the governing government’s extravagant lifestyle.
He claims that in order to address specific crises in 2020 and 2022, the BoG provided monetary funding, which is permissible under the central bank regulation.
In contrast to its profit of GHC1.23 billion in 2021, the Central Bank reported losses of GHC60.81 billion for the 2022 fiscal year.
