The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has issued a stern warning to fishermen planning to land their catches at the Togo border during the closed season.
Speaking at a ceremonial sea closure, the Fisheries Minister emphasised the importance of sustaining marine resources and ensuring the long-term livelihoods of fishing communities.
She described the closed season as a time for reflection and rejuvenation of marine ecosystems, celebrating progress in sustainable fishing practices.
Ms. Koomson highlighted the crucial role of healthy oceans in sustaining communities, noting that protecting marine resources today is essential for securing a prosperous future for upcoming generations.
Hawa Koomson further announced that the Ministry and the Marine Enforcement Unit will arrest and charge violators.
She pointed out the alarming decline in catches from both marine and inland sources, attributing this to overfishing and unsustainable practices.
These practices, she warned, threaten the very foundation of the fishing sector. Additionally, she declared that the use of monofilament nets and unauthorised fishing gear will be banned once the season reopens.
Emphasising the importance of the closed fishing season, the minister stated that it is crucial for allowing fish stocks to replenish, ensuring that future generations can continue to benefit from the ocean’s bounty.
