The Creative Arts Agency of Ghana (CAA) is advocating for the development of a unique musical sound to bolster the nation’s musical identity and enhance its global market appeal.
The agency asserts that the absence of a distinctive music sound has impeded Ghana’s global influence, despite being pioneers of highlife.
At a recent stakeholders’ engagement with artists and managers, CAA’s Executive Secretary, Gyankroma Akufo-Addo, underscored the necessity for a unique Ghanaian music sound.
“If we say Ghana music, the next question will be, What is Ghana music? Everybody is doing everything, and so we are supporting everything.
However, our producers and musicians must be able to come up with a particular sound that is coming from Ghana. For instance, if it is highlife, let’s do it, or hiplife, let’s stick to that.
Whichever one, I think the most important thing is to have a music sound from Ghana that will be internationally recognized,” she stated.
Deputy Executive Secretary , Frank Kwabena Owusu added that just as Jamaica has successfully promoted reggae, Ghana can also achieve significant global recognition with its sound.
He clarified that the initiative is not intended to discourage musicians from exploring other genres but to establish a strong, recognizable music identity for Ghana.
the PlayGhana initiative launched last December, by CAA aims to reverse the declining trend of Ghanaian music on the airwaves and ensure that when people hear music from Ghana, they can immediately identify its origin.
