Musician Guru, privately known as Maradona Adjei Yeboah Alongside his running mate, Jeffery Adu-Yeboah, has won the University of Ghana (UG) Student Representative Council (SRC) presidential elections.
Reports indicate that they secured 9,455 out of 18,659 total votes cast. Before this victory, Asioh Joseph Mawuli, a second-year Bachelor of Arts student, had filed a lawsuit against the university’s management over the SRC elections.
The legal action followed Guru’s re-entry into the race after initially being disqualified by the SRC’s Electoral Commission due to his non-resident status, which violated Article 30 of the SRC constitution.
This rule mandates that candidates must reside on campus and be eligible to contest for a Junior Common Room (JCR) position.
Further, Mawuli sought a court ruling to affirm the legality of the disqualification of both Guru and another candidate, Emmanuel Owusu Amponsah, for not meeting the requirements under Article 30(1)(a) of the constitution.
