Information Minister Fatimatu Abubakar has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to collaborating with stakeholders to address the issue of illegal mining, known as galamsey in Ghana.
In a statement released on Friday, October 4, after a closed-door meeting between President Akufo-Addo and leaders of organised labour, the minister stressed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) government’s focus on safeguarding the environment while promoting sustainable mining practices.
Organised Labour’s declaration of an indefinite strike starting on October 10, following the government’s failure to meet their demands for a total mining ban and a state of emergency to address galamsey, prompted the meeting.
The statement underscored the government’s ongoing efforts to ensure sustainable mining and environmental protection, reassuring the public that discussions with stakeholders would continue to meet these goals.
