The government has allocated GHS1 million to support the victims of the fire that destroyed the Kantamanto Market in Accra on January 2, 2025.
In a gesture of solidarity, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, on behalf of the President, extended condolences to the traders, presented the funds, and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to rebuilding the market into a modern, multi-purpose facility aimed at improving trade and safety.
Furthermore, the chairman of the Kantamanto Traders Association, Rev. Opoku Afreh, expressed gratitude for the government’s support and shared that the association had secured a $100 million loan from Access Bank for the market’s reconstruction.
However, he also called on the government to address ongoing land disputes that are hindering the rebuilding process.
Notably, this donation fulfils a promise made by President John Dramani Mahama, who met with the Kantamanto Traders Association—representing 13 groups—shortly after taking office.
