At a press briefing in Accra on August 26, Finance Minister Dr Mohammed Amin Adam announced that the government will allocate 8 billion Ghana cedis to support farmers impacted by the ongoing drought.
During his address,he reveal that, the severe drought in Northern Ghana threatens food security and jeopardizes the livelihoods of thousands of farmers. Hence, a 2.5 billion of the funds will come from the contingency fund, while 2.4 billion will be from development partners.
“Our response may not fully resolve the issue, but it will certainly help stabilise the situation until we overcome the crisis,” he said.
Dr Amin Adam added that the government aims to raise approximately 500 million U.S. dollars, equivalent to 8 billion Ghana Cedis, to fund the crisis response program.
The relief package will include cash transfers and the distribution of food and other essential supplies to affected farmers. He also confirmed that a technical task force, comprising members from the Ministries of Finance and Food and Agriculture, will oversee the distribution process to ensure fairness and accountability.
The World Bank will support the initiative by facilitating cash transfers and providing necessary inputs.
