The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has given the Ministry of Education a two-week deadline to distribute laptops from the ‘1-teacher, 1-laptop’ program to educators.
GNAT’s General Secretary, Thomas Musah Tanko, expressed these concerns in an interview with 3News on August 12, emphasizing that GNAT believes the delay is causing significant unrest and frustration among its members, which might disrupt the peaceful industrial climate.
“So far, educators have received over 3,000 laptops, but more than 60,000 remain undelivered since 2018. Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum had promised to complete the distribution by August 31.”
Further, Mr Tanko also pointed out the rising cost of living, noting a 17% increase in fuel prices from January to June and a current cement price of about GHC100 per bag. He has called on the government to introduce policies to address these economic challenges.
Additionally, Mr Tanko urged the Minister to meet this deadline and fulfil his commitment to the Labour Commission, where GNAT will return on August 29.
