The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has projected that Ghana’s population, currently at 33 million, will increase to 52.47 million by 2050.
In its Population Projection for 2021–2050 report, released in Accra on July 2, the GSS revealed that the population is expected to grow steadily, with an average annual increase of 711,706 people from 2021 to 2030.
The report indicates that both the Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions are projected to surpass 7.5 million residents by 2050.
Additionally, the Northern, North East, and Savannah Regions are anticipated to experience the highest growth rates, with their populations expected to double by 2050.
The government statistician, Professor Samuel Kobina Annim, highlighted that these projections underscore the need to revisit discussions around retirement age.
