Ghanaian students secured nearly $9.2 million in scholarships across over 680 U.S. higher education institutions, according to a report by the Institute of International Education (IIE).
The U.S. Embassy shared in a November 18 Facebook post that the U.S. continues to be the leading destination for international students, with over 1.1 million enrolled in the 2023-2024 academic year, marking a 7% increase from the previous year.
Thus, most international students are studying in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), with math and computer science as the top fields of study.
Through EducationUSA, the U.S. Embassy helps prospective students navigate the application process for U.S. colleges and universities, both virtually and in person. Further, Ghana has EducationUSA Advising Centres in Accra and Kumasi, and a new centre will open in Osu later in November to broaden access to advising services.
Moreover, Ghana also ranked 18th globally among the top 25 countries sending students to the U.S., a position it has held for the second consecutive year.
The 2024 Open Doors Report revealed that 9,394 Ghanaians studied in the U.S. in the 2023-2024 academic year, a 45.2% increase and a new record.
Among them, 6,337 were enrolled in graduate programs, marking a 54% rise and making Ghana the ninth-largest source of graduate students in the U.S. worldwide.
