A group of Ghanaians gathered outside the United Nations (UN) Headquarters in New York, demanding the immediate release of the remanded Democracy Hub protesters.
In a viral video, the demonstrators held placards, calling for a ban on illegal mining and urging President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to swiftly protect the country’s forests and water bodies.
The protest, initially intended to be peaceful, escalated into violence when demonstrators clashed with the police.
Further, the Ghana Police Service accused the protesters of blocking roads, dismantling police barriers, and disrupting traffic at the 37 Roundabout in Accra, leading to the arrest of over 40 protesters.
On Tuesday, September 24, the court remanded 39 protesters into custody for two weeks, with an additional 11 remanded on September 25. Democracy Hub organised the protests on Saturday, September 21, 2024, to oppose illegal mining, also known as galamsey.
