The Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Dr. Awal Mohammed, has affirmed that the government’s partnership agreement with Afro Nation remains intact. Despite recent announcements that Nigeria will be hosting its version of the concert, Dr. Awal Mohammed assured that the Afro Nation event will still be held in Ghana. He made these statements during an interview with Joy FM on August 14, 2023, on the sidelines of an editors’ forum held at the Accra City Hotel.
In response to questions about the future of Afro Nation in Ghana, Dr. Awal Mohammed stated, “Afro Nation has not been taken away from Ghana. We even had a meeting last week. We discussed it. There are certain demands they want and we are trying to look at how to collaborate. It has not been taken yet. But we have alternatives.” When asked about the likelihood of Afro Nation continuing in Ghana, he expressed confidence, saying, “most likely. Very likely. This year, over the next three years.”
The government of Ghana had previously signed a five-year deal with Event Horizon Entertainment Limited to host Afro Nation in the country. This agreement was established after the successful hosting of the inaugural Afro Nation event in Ghana from December 27 to 30, 2019, at the Laboma Beach in Accra. The signing ceremony was graced by the presence of the President, Nana Akufo-Addo, and representatives from the Ghana Tourism Authority.
A few months ago, the CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Akwasi Agyemang, had disclosed that there were indications of interest from other countries to host similar events like Afro Nation. Agyemang emphasized the importance of assessing the impact and benefits of such events on the Ghanaian economy. He revealed that other nations had approached organizers of events like Afrochella and Afro Nation, seeking to bring these events to their respective countries.
Afro Nation, founded by Adesegun Adeosun (SMADE) of Smade Entertainment and Obi Asika, is not limited to Ghana. It has expanded its presence to various countries, including the United States, Puerto Rico, Mexico, and Portugal. The organizers entered into a 5-year partnership deal with the Ghanaian government, and the event had to take a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic before returning in December 2022.
Despite concerns expressed by some Ghanaians about the possible impact of competing events, Dr. Awal Mohammed’s reassurances should bring relief to fans and supporters of Afro Nation in Ghana. The continuity of the partnership signals a commitment to cultural exchange, tourism, and economic growth through these vibrant music and arts festivals. As plans unfold, Afro Nation remains poised to remain a significant highlight on Ghana’s cultural calendar.
