The Ghana Space Science and Technology Institute has announced Ghana’s plans to launch a rocket into space.
During the 2024 IAU General Assembly, which took place in Cape Town, South Africa, research scientist Dr Naomi Asabre Frimpong from the Ghana Space Science Institute confirmed Ghana’s space ambitions.
She pointed out that realising this plan will necessitate substantial investments in space technology, engineering, communication, and research, as the current infrastructure does not support advanced missions such as reaching the International Space Station.
Furthermore, she mentioned that the institute’s goal will require collaboration with other International Astronomical Union (IAU) member states.
This collaboration will create a global platform for astronomers, scientists, and researchers to discuss advancements in astronomical research and foster international cooperation.
Notably, this marks the first time in the IAU’s 105-year history that the assembly has occurred on the African continent, signifying a major milestone for both the IAU and South Africa.
The assembly, which drew over 2,000 experts from 82 countries, highlights Cape Town’s rising prominence as a key centre for scientific dialogue and innovation.
