The Ghana Police Service has confirmed the arrest of Oliver Barker-Vormawor, the convener of the Democracy Hub protest.
Earlier, the police issued a statement declaring him wanted, but Barker-Vormawor dismissed this claim as “baseless and misleading” in a Facebook post.
Police took Barker-Vormawor into custody on Monday, September 23, 2024, for allegedly participating in unlawful activities during the protest on September 21 and 22.
This arrest followed the detention of two other Democracy Hub protesters on the same day. The two men, who stood near the 37 Lorry Station for over an hour, approached the police, holding placards and protesting against illegal mining, the central issue of the demonstration.
The men boldly declared, “You can arrest more of us, but even if only two of us remain, we will stand up against illegal mining.”
Their defiant act led to their immediate arrest, bringing the total number of detained protesters over the three-day protest to 44.
