The Ghana Plastic Manufacturers’ Association (GPMA), in collaboration with key industry partners, has announced a significant breakthrough following extensive discussions with the government over the proposed 5% excise tax on all locally manufactured plastic products.
In a press release, the GPMA, along with the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), the National Association of Sachet and Packaged Water Producers (NASPAWAP), the Food and Beverage Association of Ghana (FABAG), and the Plastic Sellers Association of Ghana (PSAG), detailed the outcome of a productive meeting held on July 5, 2024.
The meeting, attended by the Honourable Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Michael Okyere Baafi (MP), showcased the government’s willingness to engage with industry stakeholders.
Hon Baafi, representing the Ministry of Trade and Industry, assured the associations of his commitment to facilitating further discussions with the government. He also promised to initiate the necessary mechanisms and procedures to halt the implementation of the proposed 5% excise tax.
As a result of these assurances, the GPMA and its partners have called off initially planned demonstrations scheduled for July 10, 2024.
