The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has announced an outbreak of dengue fever in several districts of the Eastern Region.
In a press statement, Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), asserted that they initially mistook the cases for clinical malaria.
However, after testing samples at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), the GHS confirmed nine cases. These cases did not respond to standard antimalarial treatment, so they managed them as acute febrile illnesses.
The national surveillance system detected these atypical malaria cases, which prompted further investigation and the eventual identification of dengue fever.
In response, a team of entomologists and epidemiologists from the national level has joined regional health officials to conduct a detailed investigation.
The GHS has directed regional health directors and teaching hospital CEOs to inform all healthcare workers about this critical development.
