The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has dismissed allegations of a potential military coup in the event of election-related violence.
In a statement, the military clarified that they would only assist the police if requested and emphasised that such support does not equate to a government takeover, contrary to claims by Dr Emmanuel Akwetey, Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG).
The GAF further rejected accusations that they had previously announced plans to assume control of the country during electoral disturbances.
They asserted that Dr Akwetey’s claims are baseless, as the military has never held press conferences indicating such intentions.
