GFA President Pledges To Implement VAR Technology In Football

Written by Sarah Boye

President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, has committed to implementing Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology to enhance refereeing in domestic football.

According to him during a meeting with the press, although over 100 countries use VAR, it predominantly appears in wealthier nations and major tournaments.

Further Mr Okraku has emphasised the association’s plan to introduce VAR to the Ghana Premier League to address officiating issues.

“We will introduce VAR into our football and take all necessary steps to implement it, starting with our GPL, as part of our broader strategy to improve refereeing.

Ghana first implemented the Video Assistant Referee technology during a crucial 2022 World Cup qualifier against Nigeria at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

In that match, VAR played a significant role, notably overturning a penalty decision.”
