Ghanaian musician Trigmatic has highlighted the growing focus of African artists on international markets as a key challenge for the African music industry.
In an interview on Showbiz 360, Trigmatic pointed out that despite the industry’s vast potential, it remains underutilised in supporting local markets because many artists are chasing international recognition at the expense of their home audiences.
He explained that this pursuit of Western validation has created a significant gap in the industry.
“I’ve visited several African countries and noticed that we share similar cultures. The market is huge, but we haven’t fully tapped into it,” Trigmatic said.
He further noted that it’s difficult to hear music from other African countries on local platforms, except for a few Nigerian songs or tracks by well-known Ghanaian artists like Stonebwoy and Magnum.
“There’s a gap. Artists from Uganda and Tanzania are focuse on breaking into Europe or America instead of strengthening their local presence. Our markets are wide open. We have let our guard down,” he remarked.
Trigmatic called on African artists to prioritise their domestic markets rather than seeking validation from the West.
