Finance Minister Apologizes To Ghanaians For Hardships

Written by Sarah Boye

Finance Minister Dr Mohammed Amin Adam apologized to Ghanaians for the hardships caused by the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).

His apology follows Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong’s call for New Patriotic Party (NPP) members to admit their mistakes and apologize.

Additionally, Obuasi West MP Kwaku Kwarteng recently advised the NPP to recognize past and present failures to strengthen the party’s future prospects.

At a town hall meeting in Accra on August 6, 2024, Dr. Amin Adam clarified that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) required the DDEP.

He stressed that the government did not intend to impose hardships and highlighted the necessity of debt restructuring for economic stability. He also expressed gratitude to Ghanaians for their support.

“We restructured our debts because the IMF required it. The DDEP achieved 95% participation. I appeal to the people of Ghana to forgive us. No government intends to impose hardships on its people.

The NPP has shown commitment to reducing the burden on Ghanaians. The decision was essential for economic recovery, which we are now seeing. Your support during the DDEP has been crucial. I ask for forgiveness and thank you on behalf of the president for your sacrifices,” the Finance Minister stated.

The domestic debt exchange program was part of the government’s strategy to reduce its debt burden and enhance debt sustainability.
