FIFA Confirms Saudi Arabia As 2034 World Cup Host

Written by Sarah Boye

FIFA has announced Saudi Arabia as the host of the 2034 Men’s Football World Cup, with Spain, Portugal, and Morocco set to jointly host the 2030 tournament.

Further, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay will also host three matches in the 2030 World Cup to commemorate the competition’s centenary.

FIFA finalised these decisions during its Extraordinary Congress on Wednesday, where representatives from all 211 member nations joined via video link.

In two separate votes, members first selected Uruguay, Paraguay, and Argentina as centenary hosts before confirming Spain, Portugal, and Morocco as the 2030 hosts and awarding Saudi Arabia the 2034 tournament.

Nations voted by “acclamation,” clapping in front of their cameras to signal approval. The process sparked controversy, as only one option was available for each decision.

Saudi Arabia’s selection for 2034 has faced criticism, with accusations of “sportswashing” aimed at enhancing the kingdom’s image despite concerns over its human rights record and environmental impact.

Additional reports reveal that Saudi Arabia has built only four of the 15 proposed stadiums for the 2034 World Cup.
