The Food and Drug Authority (FDA) has advised consumers to exercise extreme caution when buying palm oil, citing ongoing concerns about adulteration.
The FDA issued this warning as it intensifies efforts to combat harmful substances, particularly the ‘Sudan Four’ dye, which has been identify in some palm oil products on the market.
This industrial dye, banned in food products due to its carcinogenic properties, poses a serious health risk to consumers.
The FDA’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Roderick Daddey-Adjei, expressed deep concern over the persistence of this issue despite the Authority’s rigorous enforcement actions.
While acknowledging progress in reducing adulterated palm oil, he emphasised that even a small amount of contamination is unacceptable.
“We are still concerned about that small percentage, which indicates that those involved in this illegal activity remain active. We want to make it clear to anyone considering a return to this practice: their days are near.In our recent operation, we made arrests and handed the offenders over to the police,” he stated.
