FDA Issues Public Alert On Health Risks Of Galamsey Water Sales

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a public alert about the packaging and sale of water labelled as galamsey water, highlighting significant health risks linked to this practice.

In a statement on Monday, October 21, 2024, the FDA emphasised that these actions violate the Public Health Act.

“Packaging unsafe water not only endangers public health but also poses serious risks to consumers. Licensed sachet water producers cannot use their facilities for any other products, as this breaches the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851), compromising consumer safety.”The FDA stated

The FDA announced its partnership with security agencies to track down and arrest those involved in this illegal trade.

“Individuals engaged in packaging or distributing ‘galamsey water’ or any other unsafe water will face harsh penalties. The FDA will not tolerate actions that endanger public health.”We strongly advise the public to avoid supporting or consuming water contaminated by galamsey or any unsafe sources.”
