The Electoral Commission of Ghana has urged the public to ignore false claims circulating in two viral videos on social media.
In a recent press statement, the Commission highlighted that the videos feature two women, who identify as members of a political party, falsely accusing the Commission of conducting voter registration and a Transfer of Votes exercise.
Crucially, the individuals making these allegations provided no evidence, and the videos do not include any images of registration kits or relevant materials. Additionally, no officials from the Commission appear in the footage.
The Commission views these allegations as detrimental to the democratic process and urges the public to disregard them. It calls on the Ghana Police Service to swiftly arrest and prosecute those responsible for these false claims.
Furthermore, the Commission appeals to all stakeholders, particularly political parties, to avoid spreading misinformation that could undermine state institutions and threaten national peace and stability.
The Commission completed the 2024 Limited Voter Registration Exercise on May 29, 2024. While the Transfer of Votes application period officially ended on June 14.
