“ECOWAS Ready To Welcome Breakaway Members”-Akuffo-Addo

Written by Sarah Boye

President Nana Akufo-Addo announced that ECOWAS is ready to welcome the three breakaway member states back into the regional bloc.

In an interview with France 24, the President asserted that Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso underscore the significance of these founding members, stating,

“We cannot just wash our hands off them.” He highlighted the importance of ongoing efforts to find common ground that would facilitate their return to the organisation.

Further, report indicate the three nations, currently under military rule following a series of coups, expressed their intent to leave ECOWAS last year as the bloc pressed them to restore democratic governance.

In a surprising development amid ongoing discussions about their potential reintegration, the countries announced the formation of the Alliance of Sahel States to bolster their position.

The military leaders of these nations outlined plans to establish a joint investment bank and stabilisation fund, pooling resources for vital sectors such as mining, energy, and agriculture. They also agreed to develop infrastructure to ensure the free movement of citizens among the three countries.
