The ECOWAS Court has ruled that Ghana unlawfully arrested and detained Shalimar Abbiusi, spokesperson for the New Force Movement.
In a statement dated November 22, 2024, the New Force Movement revealed that the court found Ghana guilty of violating Ms. Abbiusi’s rights through her rearrest and illegal deportation, actions that breached Article 6 of the Liberty of People.
The statement accused government officials of detaining and deporting Ms. Abbiusi unlawfully, even after the state prosecutor dropped all charges, calling it an abuse of power intended to suppress political dissent.
Further, the court ordered the Ghanaian government to compensate her as part of the ruling.
BACKGROUND;
Authorities initially arrested Ms. Abbiusi in December 2023 for allegedly submitting false documents to obtain a residence permit as a student at the Ghana Christian University College.
In October 2024, she filed a case against the IGP and Attorney-General at the ECOWAS Court, which ultimately ruled in her favor.
