EC Warns Against Fake News Threat Ahead Of Elections

Written by Sarah Boye

The Electoral Commission (EC) has raised alarms over the threat fake news and disinformation pose to the December 7 general elections.

EC’s Director of Training, Dr Serebour Quaicoo, warned in a media interview on Tuesday, November 12, that misinformation could erode voter confidence and jeopardise a peaceful electoral process.

He emphasised that unchecked false information could confuse voters, incite tensions, and undermine the credibility of the elections.

“We have identified misinformation as the greatest fear for Election 2024 and stated that the EC is intensifying its efforts to strengthen communication channels to deliver timely and accurate information to the public.”

Further, he also urged voters to rely on credible sources for election updates and to report any suspicious or unverified content.

“Traditional and social media often prioritise speed over accuracy, which can amplify falsehoods.I foresee people circulating videos that may not even relate to Ghana’s elections,” he cautioned.
