Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has proposed the introduction of solar-powered outboard motors as a solution to the longstanding challenges with premix fuel faced by fishermen.
Speaking at Saltpond during a campaign tour, Dr Bawumia acknowledged previous efforts, such as the installation of automated premix dispensing machines, which have not fully resolved the problem.
Therefore, he now proposes the introduction of solar-powered outboard motors as a lasting fix to provide a more sustainable and permanent fix for the fishing industry’s fuel concerns.
“When we came into office, we introduced premix automation, including here in Mfantseman, but challenges with the premix system remain.” “After careful thought and discussion, I believe we’ve found a permanent solution.”
Further, Dr Bawumia announced a shift away from dependency on premix fuel to solar-powered boats, with a pilot program for solar-powered outboard motors set to launch by the end of the year.
“With solar power, fishermen won’t need to buy premix fuel anymore. Their batteries will charge as long as the sun shines, allowing them to operate their boats, the pilot is intend to begin next month, with demonstrations to educate fishermen on the new technology. Once implemented, this system will eliminate the need for premix fuel altogether.” he said,
