Minister of Finance Dr Mohammed Amin Adam has launched a GH¢500,000 scholarship fund to support journalists from the Northern Region in pursuing higher education.

Speaking at the Northern Regional Ghana Journalists Association Awards in Tamale, Dr Amin Adam voiced concern over the challenging working conditions faced by journalists, despite their crucial role in shaping public discourse and informing the public on government policies.

He called on media owners to improve compensation for journalists, stressing that better welfare would foster professionalism and independence in the media sector.

“I’ve engaged with many of you and media proprietors, and I’m often alarmed by the conditions you work under. Journalists serve as the bridge between the people and the government, yet their working conditions fail to match the value they offer.”

Further, he acknowledged the current economic challenges but emphasised the need for media owners to prioritise fair wages and benefits.

“I urge media owners to properly reward you for the vital service you provide to society,” he added.

Dr. Amin Adam also used the occasion to highlight the government’s economic strides, noting significant increases in spending on social programs.

“In 2016, we spent nearly GH¢1 billion on the National Health Programme. Last year, this grew to GH3 billion, and this year we are allocating GH6.5 billion towards health insurance. We remain focused on social investments to reduce poverty.”

The scholarship initiative aims to equip journalists with opportunities to advance their skills and further their careers.
