Dr Amarh Unveils Plan For Mandatory School Enrolment For Age 4

Written by Sarah Boye

Dr Prince Hamid Armah, the Education Manifesto Chair for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has outlined the party’s plan to make school enrolment mandatory for children starting at age four.

He emphasised that the next NPP government, under Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s leadership, will improve kindergarten (KG) education nationwide by building modern KG blocks in areas that currently lack them, recognising early childhood education as the foundation for future learning.

Dr Armah acknowledged that while Ghana’s Constitution mandates compulsory education, it currently does not penalise non-compliance. However, this initiative aims to provide children with a solid educational foundation from a young age.

He stated,

“If we want to make education compulsory, we must ensure children attend school. We have designed technology to support this. The National Identification Authority already issues identification numbers to newborns, and the Birth and Death Registry operates at the district level.”

He further stressed that with this data, district education oversight committees, working with Assembly members, will identify children approaching the age of four and enforce compulsory enrollment.
