The Director-General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Prof Amin Alhassan, has strongly refuted claims made by the Sports Ministry that GBC received over $3 million for its coverage of the 13th African Games.
Speaking on GBC, Prof Alhassan clarified that the broadcaster received only $105,000. He explained that the money supported GBC’s decision to devote an entire channel to the African Games, which temporarily suspended regular programming on GTV Sports Plus.
“I was shock to hear the Minister of Youth and Sports claim that GBC received over $3 million. I want to assure the public that GBC only benefited $105,000 from the African Games. GBC received no additional payments.
We specifically received the $105,000 to support our decision to provide 24-hour coverage by dedicating a channel entirely to the African Games, which led us to suspend our normal programming on GTV Sports Plus as the official broadcaster.”
These statements contradict Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif’s claim that the state broadcaster received more than $3 million, which he made in response to Committee member Sam George’s concerns about unpaid debts to technical staff who worked on the event.
