Africa Education Watch (EduWatch) has called on Parliament to postpone the introduction of the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) Bill, urging thorough consultations with key stakeholders before proceeding.
In a statement issued on December 13, EduWatch criticised the government’s plan to present the bill to Parliament on December 16, accusing it of sidelining critical stakeholder input. The organisation stressed the need for transparency and inclusivity in shaping policies that impact Ghana’s education system.
It demanded that Parliament suspend deliberations on the bill until the education minister convenes consultative meetings with key groups such as civil society organisations, development partners, parents, and teachers.
Further, the advocacy group also called on the education minister to take the lead in discussions with experts, civil society, and parent-teacher associations to develop a bill that reflects diverse perspectives and national priorities.
The Free Senior High School Bill, 2024, draughted by the Ministry of Education, seeks to provide a legal framework for free and compulsory education at the Senior High School level.
