“Current Government Will Reinstate Road Tolls”-Dr Ato Forson

Written by Sarah Boye

The Finance Minister-Designate, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has confirmed that the NDC-led government will reinstate road tolls in Ghana during his vetting before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on January 13, 2025.

During the session, Ato Forson reaffirmed the NDC’s commitment to this policy, reversing the decision made by the previous government under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, which abolished the tolls.

“The NDC had always planned to bring back the tolls and assured that the party would keep its promises, including using the tolls to raise revenue.”

Further, Ato Forson explained that although the previous government abolished the tolls, it signaled their return toward the end of its term and even presented a proposal to Parliament, which it did not pursue.

BACKGROUND

Road tolls were introduce in Ghana in the early 1990s to fund road construction and maintenance. However in 2021, the Akufo-Addo administration controversially abolished them, citing inefficiency, high collection costs, and minimal revenue as the reasons for the move.
