The Circuit Court 9 in Accra has sentenced 33-year-old Christopher Kofi Okyere Sorkpa to five years in prison for vandalising four vehicles in the Parliament House car park on Wednesday, December 18, 2024.
On Friday, December 20, 2024, Sorkpa pleaded guilty to all charges. The court sentenced him to three years for the first charge and five years for each of the five additional charges, with the sentences to run concurrently.
41-year-old Wisdom Ahli, the second accused, also pleaded guilty to the first charge. However, His Lordship Samuel Bright Acquah instructed prosecutors to revise the charges against Ahli and conduct a thorough review before the next hearing.
The charge sheet revealed that Sorkpa and Ahli, both preachers from Kasoa, entered the Parliament car park around 1:00 PM on December 18, 2024. They concealed an earth chisel in a handbag and used it to damage the windscreens of four vehicles, including two V8s, a Toyota Camry, and a RAV4 belonging to members of Parliament.
Police arrested the pair at the scene, and they later confessed to the crime in caution statements made in the presence of an independent witness.
The court adjourned the trial to January 9, 2025, for further proceedings.
