The court has granted bail to fifty-two protesters from Democracy Hub following their arrests during demonstrations that took place from September 21 to September 23.
On Tuesday, October 8, the Accra Circuit Court approved bail for 31 individuals, adding to the 21 others who had received bail from the High Court earlier.
However, the court denied bail to the group’s lead convener, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, for a second time. The Circuit Court required the 31 released protesters to pay a bail bond of GHS 20,000, each accompanied by one surety.
On Monday, the High Court had granted bail to the 21 others after their lawyers successfully appealed a remand decision. With this latest development, the total number of protesters granted bail rises to 52 out of the 53 arrested, while Barker-Vormawor remains in custody.
Before the Circuit Court session, the defence team attempted to secure their clients’ release at the High Court, but the Attorney General’s office opposed this effort, resulting in an adjournment until Wednesday.
