Two individuals accused of impersonating North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa were left without legal representation when they appeared in court, prompting the judge to adjourn the case until July 25.
A phone repairer, Promise Ahorgah and a construction labourer Kwaotse Mawuli, allegedly created social media accounts in the MP’s name to solicit funds for victims of the Akosombo and Kpong Dam spillages, according to the prosecution.
During the court session on Monday, July 8, the accused explained to Justice Lydia Osei that their lawyer had abandoned the case due to non-payment. Hence , requested more time to address the issue.
Justice Osei Marfo on the other hand then requested assistance from other lawyers present in the courtroom. Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu and his team agreed to take on the case pro bono.
Senior State Attorney Nancy Korkor Hammond informed the court that the prosecution needed to file a new charge sheet based on new information but had not yet done so. She assured the court that it would be ready by the next hearing.
Accused persons have pleaded not guilty to six counts of fraud and have been granted GHC50,000 each.
