Written by Yad Media

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced that Ghana will begin issuing chip-embedded passports from Monday, April 28, 2025, as part of sweeping reforms to enhance security and streamline the passport application process.

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Wednesday, April 23, Mr Ablakwa explained that the upgraded e-passports—first launched on December 2, 2024—feature enhanced biometric capabilities, including a microchip that securely stores the holder’s biometric and photographic data, along with advanced anti-fraud measures.

“The new passports, which will replace the current biometric ones, are design to meet international standards while reflecting Ghana’s cultural identity. The reforms also aim to eliminate the role of middlemen and promote transparency.”

Further, Mr Ablakwa added that the ministry is resolute to delivering a seamless, citizen-focused passport service that is accessible and free from third-party interference.

“The broader 2025 reform package includes 24-hour passport processing, courier delivery services, an electronic tracking system, and a 30% reduction in application fees.”
